Joseph Thomas Smitherman Jr., 53, died October 20, 2001, at his home in Fairhope, AL.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday October 24 at 2:00 PM in New Live Oak Cemetery with Dr. John Fain officiating and Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

He was peceded in death by his mother, Ouida Cunningham Smitherman.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Harrison Smitherman of Lexington, VA; a daughter Lucy Tylee Smitherman of Williamsburg, VA; his father Joe T. Smitherman of Selma, AL; a brother Stephen G. Smitherman (Erika) of Selma, AL; a sister Dianne Smitherman of Brimingham, AL; four nieces, Staphanie Smitherman of Gulf Shores; Suzanne Smitherman of Mountain Brook; Summer Smitherson of Auburn; and Joanna Smitherman of Selma.

Mr. Smitherman was born in Selma in 1948. He was active in the Boy Scouts, where he obtained Eagle Scout, and later graduated from A.G. Parrish High School in 1966 with honors. He attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis for a year and earned his BA from the University of Alabama. He entered the US Navy, graduated from the Pensacola flight school and served as an F-4 navigator. Following his Navy service, he attended and graduated from the University of Alabama Law School. He practiced law in Fairhope and worked as an attorney for the state of Alabama.

Pall bearers are Jack Smitherman, Craig Smitherman, Sam Smitherman, Cecil Williamson, Richard Schoultz and Otto Benford.

The family will receive friends at Lawrence Funeral Home from 5:30 to 7:30 PM Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Benevolent Fund.
